Reimagining Lewis Park Retarding Basin and Blind Creek

Alluvium helped transform Blind Creek at Lewis Park into a naturalised waterway with wetlands and harvesting ponds—enhancing flood management, biodiversity, and community spaces as part of Melbourne Water’s Reimagining Your Creek program.

Knox City Council, in collaboration with Melbourne Water, engaged Alluvium and REALM Studios to undertake the Lewis Park Waterway and Wetland Design project. The project focuses on Blind Creek, a tributary of Dandenong Creek, which flows through Lewis Park, a key flood management area that also provides community amenity and recreational opportunities. This initiative is part of Melbourne Water’s Reimagining Your Creek program, which aims to transform stormwater drains and concrete channels into natural waterways and valuable open spaces.

The project involved naturalising 1,650 meters of Blind Creek, removing underground pipes, and creating a more natural flow. The design also included the development of three wetlands for water treatment, habitat creation, and stormwater harvesting. Two harvesting ponds and a detention pond were added for enhanced flood management. In addition, landscaping elements like pedestrian bridges, waterway crossings, and boardwalks were incorporated.

The staged construction, completed by October 2024, spanned over 20 hectares and will improve biodiversity, water quality, and create a network of shared paths. As the region continues to grow, this area will offer an important space for community connection, recreation, and environmental enhancement.
