Alluvium Consulting is a leader in catchment, river and coastal analysis and advice. Our focus is water, and how it interacts with the environmental and community challenges that shape landscapes.

We are a science, engineering, strategy and design practice. Since 2006, we have worked with government, regulators, utilities, developers and the resources sector to understand natural and built water systems, resolve complex problems and turn evidence into practical action.

Our work is grounded in a deep understanding of how Australian catchments, rivers, floodplains, wetlands, coasts and disturbed landscapes function. We combine applied science with engineering and on-ground management experience so that the strategies and designs we develop respond to natural processes rather than work against them.

That capability spans waterway and wetland management, fluvial geomorphology, catchment hydrology and flood modelling, water and catchment policy, engineered design solutions, urban water systems, coastal management, climate adaptation and resilience, environmental strategy, evaluation and audit.

Our waterway specialists bring together geomorphology, hydrology, hydraulics, aquatic ecology and river engineering. That integrated view allows us to understand how stream systems are likely to evolve and to design rehabilitation and management responses that are practical, resilient and sustainable.

Our engineering work extends across waterway and coastal erosion, floodplain management, urban stormwater, mine water management, gully erosion, fish passage and instream water regulation structures. We have designed waterway erosion solutions for almost two decades, combining hydraulic modelling and engineering with an understanding of river processes and landscape response.

For the resources sector, this creates a particularly strong platform. Mine closure and rehabilitation are fundamentally landscape and water problems: runoff, erosion, landform stability, drainage, receiving waterways, ecology and long-term stewardship all interact. We can bring those disciplines together from strategy and assessment through design, implementation and monitoring.

About the role

This is an opportunity to build a nationally recognised mine closure, landscape restoration and water-systems capability, not simply step into an established portfolio.

You will lead and expand Alluvium Consulting’s work in mine closure water management, landform design and landscape rehabilitation across Australia, while also supporting and leading significant waterway restoration projects across Australia and internationally.

Working with established waterways, hydrology, engineering and ecology teams, you will provide technical leadership on complex closure, rehabilitation and waterway restoration projects while helping shape where we play, the clients we work with, the methods we develop and the people we bring into the team.

A significant part of the role is commercial as well as technical. You will build senior relationships across the resources and water sectors, develop a strong pipeline of work and establish a clear market position around practical, science-based closure, rehabilitation and restoration solutions that improve environmental outcomes while meeting regulatory and operational objectives.

This is both a technical leadership role and a business-building role.

Over time, we see the practice connecting mine closure planning with catchment hydrology, geomorphology, landform evolution, erosion control, ecology, engineering and monitoring, creating an integrated offer that is technically rigorous and practical to implement.

What we do not yet have is a nationally scaled practice deliberately built around this opportunity. That is what we want you to help create.

  • Lead technical delivery of mine closure water management, landform design and rehabilitation projects.
  • Build and grow Alluvium’s resources-sector service offering nationally.

You are likely to be a Principal, Technical Director, Practice Lead or senior consultant with around 10 or more years of relevant experience.

You will be comfortable working across mine closure planning, landscape rehabilitation and surface-water management and able to translate technical evidence into practical designs and closure strategies.

You will understand landform evolution and erosion processes, stable landform and drainage design, Australian closure regulation and completion criteria, and the realities of delivering work in operational mining environments.

By this point in your career, you will also have built more than technical expertise. You will have relationships, professional credibility and the judgement to sit across the table from mining executives, regulators and technical specialists and work through difficult decisions.

Most importantly, you will have ideas about how this area of practice should evolve and the ambition to help build it.

The essentials

  • Degree in Civil, Environmental or Mining Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Approximately 10+ years’ experience in mine closure, mine rehabilitation or mine water management.
  • Demonstrated experience in mine closure planning and design and/or landscape rehabilitation.
  • Strong understanding of surface-water management, landform evolution and erosion processes.
  • Experience designing stable mine landforms, drainage systems and rehabilitation strategies.
  • Practical knowledge of mine closure regulations and completion criteria across Australian jurisdictions.
  • Strong client relationships and business-development capability in the resources sector.

Mine closure and rehabilitation are increasingly whole-of-landscape challenges. Stable landforms and drainage systems cannot be separated from catchment processes, receiving waterways, ecology, community expectations, economic choices and the long-term use and value of land.

Alluvium Consulting brings one of Australia’s deepest waterway management platforms to that challenge, with established capability in river and catchment science, fluvial geomorphology, hydrology, hydraulics, waterway engineering, rehabilitation and restoration.
